Democratic Party Announces Third Special Prosecutor Law
The ruling and opposition parties clashed again on the 26th over the ‘Cha Sang-byeong Special Prosecutor’s Act’, which was automatically scrapped after being rejected in a re-vote at the National Assembly plenary session the previous day. The People Power Party said, “The special prosecutor’s act proposed by the Democratic Party of Korea must never pass,” and the Democratic Party of Korea countered by saying, “We will propose a more strengthened Cha Sang-byeong Special Prosecutor’s Act,” foreshadowing a third Cha Sang-byeong Special Prosecutor’s Act. The Democratic Party plans to finish voting on the four broadcasting laws by the 30th of this month and also forcefully pass the ‘Yellow Envelope Act (Labor Union Act amendment)’ and the People’s Livelihood Recovery Support Fund Act at the plenary session on August 1, so the clash between the ruling and opposition parties is expected to continue until just before the end of the extraordinary session of the National Assembly in July.
Park Chan-dae, the acting leader and floor leader of the Democratic Party, said at the Supreme Council meeting on the 26th, “The People Power Party has once again hamstrung the handling of the Chae Sang-byeong special prosecution bill,” and “The Democratic Party will immediately propose a strengthened Chae Sang-byeong special prosecution bill.” The Democratic Party plans to include the suspicions of Ms. Kim Keon-hee’s involvement as additional targets of investigation in the Chae Sang-byeong special prosecution bill. Pressure continued targeting Han Dong-hoon, the leader of the People Power Party who proposed a third-party recommended special prosecution bill during the party convention. Park said, “Seeing that he has been calling himself the Yongsan Sunflower and the puppet of the president and his wife from the very beginning, the sprouts of the Han Dong-hoon regime are yellow,” and Supreme Council member Ko Min-jung said, “He is a Yoon Seok-yeol avatar to the bone.”
Representative Han showed an open stance on whether to pursue the substance of the third-party recommendation special prosecutor law he proposed, but said, “I will fully explain it through the democratic process within the party.” Representative Han met with reporters that day and said, “Considering the current situation, my position that it (the third-party recommendation special prosecutor law) can be a sufficient alternative remains unchanged.” This is interpreted as a remark made in consideration of the criticism that he said he would propose a special prosecutor law if he became the party leader, but then backed out immediately after being elected. Floor leader Choo Kyung-ho also said in a press conference that day, “Since (the Democratic Party) said they would propose a stronger special prosecutor law, I will look into it carefully.”
