Park Chan-dae, acting leader and floor leader of the Democratic Party of Korea, once again urged President Yoon Seok-yeol to accept the bill, saying on the 6th, “The 250,000 won support law for all citizens (the Special Measures Act on the Payment of Livelihood Recovery Support Funds) is not a cash handout, but CPR that will save the people’s livelihoods.”

Acting President Park Geun-hye said at a meeting of special measures held at the National Assembly on that day, “President Yoon has gone on vacation,” and added, “I hope that he will not drink too much while going on a restaurant tour, but rather experience firsthand the difficulties and pain of the people’s lives.”

“Look at how many vacancies there are in markets and shopping malls across the country, how much gas and electricity rates have gone up, and how broken the merchants’ backs are,” said Park. “The number of self-employed business owners who have filed for business closures is 986,487, the highest since statistics began being compiled in 2006.”

He emphasized, “The reason we passed the livelihood recovery support fund is because people’s livelihoods are so difficult,” and “If we pay out local currency, not cash, to all citizens over a set period of time, the benefits will go directly to the self-employed and small business owners.”

He then raised his voice, saying, “This is just a drop in the bucket compared to the Yoon administration’s tax cuts for the super-rich,” and “The argument that cutting taxes for the super-rich is about revitalizing the economy while supporting small business owners and the self-employed is populism is absurd.”

Regarding the prosecution’s investigation into defamation charges against President Yoon and its investigation into the communication information of opposition politicians and journalists, Acting President Park criticized, “We cannot condone the Yoon administration’s large-scale communication surveillance.”

He asked, “There are rumors going around that this is voice phishing, as many people around the opposition party have received text messages from the prosecution asking for their communications.” He added, “Can this happen in the Republic of Korea, a democratic republic in 2024? This isn’t indiscriminate surveillance of civilians, something that only happened under military dictatorships.”

Then, when it was revealed that the Corruption Investigation Office for High-ranking Officials (CIO) had accessed the communication data of himself and his wife Kim Kun-hee at the time of his candidacy in the 2021 presidential election, President Yoon said, “Are they crazy?” and “Are they really doing this and walking around the streets in broad daylight?” He lashed out, saying, “The Yoon administration must be crazy.”

Acting President Park said, “The stock market is in a state of panic, the people’s economy is in a state of crisis, and our national security is compromised due to the leak of military secrets,” adding, “They are selling out our people’s pride through pro-Japanese, submissive diplomacy and engaging in reckless acts such as telecommunications surveillance.”
