“The Korean soccer system has completely collapsed.
“Chung Mong-gyu’s resignation is a situation where he has to choose for himself”

“It’s so miserable that I can’t even describe it.”

Park Ji-sung (pictured), former captain of the Korean national soccer team and technical director of professional soccer club Jeonbuk, criticized the Korea Football Association for the controversy that arose during the appointment of Hong Myung-bo as head coach of the national soccer team.

Director Park, who attended an event held at the National Museum of Modern and Contemporary Art in Jongno-gu, Seoul on the 12th, added, “I am most concerned that the foundation of Korean soccer could be shaken. I think the system has completely collapsed. We are in a situation where we have to rebuild everything from scratch.”

There are voices of criticism that the voice of the power reinforcement committee leading the process of selecting a new manager after the dismissal of manager Jurgen Klinsmann in February was not properly reflected. The fact that the position was left vacant for nearly five months after focusing on the appointment of a foreign manager and ultimately appointing manager Hong, who was leading professional soccer team Ulsan, is also being criticized.

Director Park emphasized, “The very promise to appoint a director through procedures has been broken. It will take a very long time for (the association) to restore the lost trust. We must move forward while telling the truth.”

Regarding the fans’ demand for the resignation of Korea Football Association Chairman Chung Mong-gyu, he said, “It is quite difficult. I don’t know how far we can go with external pressure,” but added, “It is a situation where the chairman must make his own decision.” He added, “We need to think about whether there are alternatives when the chairman says he will step down. The priority should be how to instill trust in the association in the long term.”

Director Park expressed concern, saying, “Even if we appoint a new manager with high expectations, we don’t know if the results will be good,” and “Whether or not to change the manager’s appointment is ultimately up to the association and Manager Hong. I am worried that we will not be able to move forward easily.”
