“Trust in the Association has fallen… The Association will know the truth”
“It is clear that Chairman Chung Mong-gyu must make his own choice.”
Former national soccer player Park Ji-sung expressed his dismay at the controversy surrounding the appointment of the national team coach, and cautiously added to the public opinion calling for the resignation of Korea Football Association President Chung Mong-gyu.
Park Ji-sung met with reporters after a cultural event held at the National Museum of Modern and Contemporary Art in Seoul on the 12th and expressed his feelings about the controversy surrounding the Korea Football Association and the selection of the national team coach, saying, “It is regrettable and sad that it had to turn out this way.”
When asked which he thinks is a bigger problem in the current situation, the process or the result, he answered, “The saddest thing is that there is no clear answer in sight.”
Park Ji-sung explained, “Korean soccer changed a lot because of the 2002 World Cup, and there were expectations that it would continue to change a lot in the future, but the answer to the question of what has changed since then is the current situation, which is so disappointing that I can’t say anything.”
He continued, “I also recognize that I cannot be free from this responsibility,” and added, “Many people need to speak clearly about why this situation had to happen.”
Regarding the appointment of Coach Hong Myung-bo, he said, “I don’t know the details because I wasn’t a person who was on the inside,” and “The people on the inside will know the truth.”
However, he insisted, “We cannot proceed with the current situation without any solution,” and “If we cannot turn back, we need an answer to how to proceed.”
When asked how to find the answer, he said, “In the end, the answer is the truth,” and added, “Shouldn’t (the Football Association) tell the truth and move forward?”
However, he also said, “Trust in the Korea Football Association has already fallen, and even if I tell the truth, many people will not believe me,” and “It will take a very long time for the association to regain trust.”
Regarding the soccer fans’ demand for Chairman Chung Mong-gyu to resign, he said, “It is quite a difficult part,” but added, “It is clear that Chairman Chung has to make the choice himself.”
Park Ji-sung said, “The current situation must be a huge shock to the association as well,” and “It seems that we have reached a point where we have to start over from scratch.”
He expressed his opinion on the need for resignation, saying, “Since there are no relevant regulations, I don’t know how far we can go with external pressure,” but “In the long term, if (Chairman Jeong’s resignation) is the answer to reestablishing trust in the association, then there is no doubt that it should be done.”
He also mentioned coach Hong Myung-bo, who is also receiving a lot of criticism, saying, “This is the first time this has happened and the issue is so big,” and “I am worried about how we will overcome it.”
Finally, Park Ji-sung expressed his regret, saying, “The fact that a domestic coach has been appointed must be a bewildering situation for the younger players,” and “As a senior, I feel very sorry towards the younger players.”
