Singer Park Wan-gyu (51) revealed the story of how he was kidnapped by human traffickers in the past and escaped.

Park Wan-gyu, who appeared on MBN’s ‘Dongchimi’ on the 20th, began by saying, “It was 1989. At that time, something ridiculous was trending in South Korea. It was human trafficking.” He continued, “Back then, if you turned on the TV, there were a lot of stories about human trafficking.”

When Park Wan-gyu was a freshman in high school, he was pushing a silver van with his hand when someone asked him to “push the car” while he was walking to school. Then, suddenly, someone threatened him, saying, “If you scream, I’ll kill you” and thrust a weapon at him.

At the time, he weighed 45 kg, and the place he was kidnapped was Pyeongtaek-si, Gyeonggi-do, which was formerly called Songtan-si.

He got into the van without even being able to make a sound, and all he saw were two female students sleeping.

Soon after, the trafficker offered him a tonic, and he was so scared that he had no choice but to drink it.

Park Wan-gyu endured the pain by continuously injuring himself with the thought that ‘if he falls asleep, he might die’, and later, when he went to the hospital for a blood test, it was found to contain sleeping pills.

Park Wan-gyu said, “I was eventually taken to Daejeon. The traffickers parked in an alley near the Daejeon terminal to eat,” and “I pretended to be asleep at the time, ran away, and got into a taxi right away.”

He continued, “I asked the taxi driver to take me to Pyeongtaek (Songtan). At first, he thought the distance was too far and asked, ‘What?’ But he knew something was wrong with me and started driving.” He continued, “I explained the whole story as we drove. After that, we stopped at a rest stop and the driver reported it to the police.”

He added, “At that time, the police station in charge was Pyeongtaek Police Station, and later on, they confronted the four criminals. After that, they said that the human traffickers had been caught, so I went there, but it wasn’t the four criminals.” He continued, “Human trafficking was very popular at that time. They caught a lot of short men and tried to sell them like slaves on anchovy fishing boats.”

Park Wan-gyu was the fifth vocalist of Boohwal for three years from 1997 to 1999, before leaving the group. He was later re-hired in 2019 as the successor to Kim Dong-myeong, the tenth vocalist of Boohwal.
