This Tuesday, in a relevant meeting between legislators of the Legislative Assembly and members of the Democratic Security of the Central American Integration System (SICA); the deputies of the Central American Parliament (PARLACEN), on behalf of the Nuevas Ideas party, presented a proposal to reform the Law for the Prevention and Protection against Cybercrime in the Member Countries of SICA. The proposal was delivered to the president of the Commission for National Security and Combating Drug Trafficking, Caleb Navarro.

This effort seeks to establish a robust legal framework to address the challenges of cybercrime in the region, introducing new criminal figures and adapting existing criminal norms. The proposal is currently under analysis within PARLACEN and will be shared with all Legislative Assemblies and Congresses in the region for review and possible adoption.

Parliamentarian Carlos Hernández highlighted: “We recognize the progress that has been made in the legislation against cybercrime by the Legislative Assembly; however, cybercriminals are constantly innovating in new ways of committing crimes, so it is appropriate to analyze this law and propose the pertinent reforms in order to create a safe cyberspace in our country and the region.”

For her part, PARLACEN deputy Cecilia Rivera commented: “We recognize the progress made by the Cyan Caucus of the Legislative Assembly in this fight, but it is vital that we anticipate the constantly evolving tactics of cybercriminals.”

“It is time to join forces and work on reforms that will allow us to build a safer cyberspace for everyone,” Rivera added.

The proposed reform represents a significant step towards improving cybersecurity in the region and strengthening legal capacities to face the new challenges of the digital environment.
