The National Assembly (Parliament) of Nicaragua approved this Tuesday (10/31/2023) in Managua a reform to the Political Constitution in which they remove powers from the Supreme Court of Justice over the Public Registries of Real Estate and Commercial Property.

With the constitutional reform, approved by Parliament, where the ruling party has an absolute majority, “the Public Registries are separated from the administration of justice in charge of the Judiciary,” reported the Nicaraguan Legislature in a statement.

According to the Sandinista legislators, the Public Registries will come under the administration of the Attorney General’s Office of the Republic “in order to streamline and optimize the services provided by them in matters of property, commercial matters, persons, movable guarantees and final beneficiary of commercial companies.” ».

The constitutional reform removes from the National Judicial Career Council, subordinate to the Supreme Court, the power to “supervise the administrative functioning of the Public Registries of Real Estate and Commercial Property, as well as that of the common services offices.”

CSJ intervened by the Police

Now the administrative supervision of these records will be under the control of the Attorney General’s Office, through the Law of Assignment of the National Records System.

The constitutional reform and the new law were approved at a time when the Supreme Court of Justice is “intervened” by the National Police.

According to the newspaper La Prensa, the National Police has arrested “dozens of employees of the Judiciary, including its president Alba Luz Ramos, who was evicted from her office and sent to her home, where she remains surrounded by police patrols” and would be under investigation. .

Neither the National Police nor the Supreme Court of Justice have referred to these alleged arrests and investigations.

Nicaragua has been going through a political and social crisis since April 2018, which has worsened after the controversial general elections of November 7, 2021, in which President Daniel Ortega was re-elected for a fifth term, fourth consecutive and second with his wife. , Rosario Murillo, as vice president, with her main contenders in prison.
