“Part of the left does not stand in the way of anti-Semitism because of its ideological positions”

In August 2021, the sign ” Who ? » brandished during a demonstration against the health pass, in Metz, by a far-right activist took place in a context of crisis, conducive to anti-Semitic displays. The horns which overhung the “Q” of the relative pronoun, serving to designate in a coded manner the responsibility of the Jews, referred to a demonic representation, fertile since the Middle Ages.

The summer news of 2023 will not have denied this success. Large commercial brands continue to offer the newspaper for sale Rivarolrelaying the anti-Jewish provocations of Dieudonné M’Bala M’Bala: Jews designated as masters of « vice » and some « corruption », “undrinkable aristocracy”, “big looters”, “unforgiving people”… It is only a drop of water, it must be emphasized, poured by a professional of hatred in an ocean of anonymous attacks, conveyed on digital platforms, and in particular on X (ex-Twitter) , the insistent image of the dominating Jew, spawn of the forces of “Evil”.

It is representations of this type which circulate among activists of the Catholic extreme right, those of Civitas, for example, whose Minister of the Interior, Gérald Darmanin, announced in August the imminent dissolution, after the essayist Pierre Hillard was applauded at the far-right movement’s summer school for having called for the “denaturalization” of French Jews. Among Islamists as well, but also, unfortunately, among more moderate minds, who see in them an omnipotent occult force. Among “anti-system” activists again, imbued with conspiratorial representations, who make Jews, through certain privileged figures (Rothschild, Soros, Attali, etc.), the actors of a mega-plot which provides the key to all the misfortunes of the world and what we don’t understand.

Crystallize hatred

From well poisoners to globalist elites, from child killers to Satanist pedophiles, the bestiary is exceptionally rich in phantasmagoria. These representations which place Jews outside of humanity do more than persist: they continue to form the core of an anti-Semitism which, even in its most banal expression, fantasizes their power and their evil role. If we do not understand this dimension specific to the phenomenon, we do not understand anti-Semitism.

The controversy surrounding the rapper Médine, invited to the summer universities of Europe Ecologie-Les Verts and La France insoumise, was the perfect illustration of this lack of understanding. Faced with the artist’s more than ambiguous career, his rewriting of the facts and his expeditious justifications, part of the left has chosen absolution rather than critical examination of his texts, his gestures and elective affinities. The rapper says he has evolved and even claimed to fight anti-Semitism. Those who are usually so demanding in terms of ideological purity, quick to denounce the “reactors”, the “fascists” or other oppressors, immediately went to the front to defend the new muse of progressive struggles and whitewash her of infamous accusations, necessarily attributable to the extreme right and Macronie. Some demanded explanations from Medina, others treated those who had implicated him as “racist”. In both cases, the affair ended with a warm ovation.
