Part-time police training in the North

The Police Authority is introducing a new part-time and distance police training course in selected areas of the Police Region North. This new training format aims to provide an opportunity for individuals who want to become police officers in their hometown but cannot commit to full-time studies. The part-time police training, known as DPU, will be conducted remotely through Umeå University and will cover 2.5 years of study at 75 to 80 percent capacity. The programme will start in August 2024.

The selected locations where the part-time training will be offered are as follows:

– Local police area in northern Lapland: Kiruna, Gällivare, and Jokkmokk.
– Local police area southern Lapland: Vilhelmina, Dorotea, Åsele, Storuman, and Sorsele.
– Local police area southern Ångermanland: Kramfors and Sollefteå.
– Local police area Medelpad: Steam.
– Local police area Jämtland/Härjedalen: Strömsund, Sveg, Funäsdalen, Bräcke, and Svenstavik.

The educational goals and admission requirements for the part-time police training are the same as the regular police training. After completing the training, participants are guaranteed placement in their chosen local police area.

Johan Ahlmark, the regional coordinator in the North police region, stated that the target group for this training is individuals who want to become police officers in their hometown but need a part-time option due to work or family commitments. He emphasized the flexibility that this programme offers in allowing individuals to work alongside their studies.

The part-time police training is being offered in specific local police areas that face challenges in recruiting new police officers due to their remote locations or sparsely populated areas. Micael Säll Lindahl, the Regional Police Chief of Polisregion Nord, mentioned that this is the first time such an opportunity is being provided, and its continuation in the future is yet to be decided. The hope is to expand this programme to more areas in need.

The application process for the part-time police training starts with registering your interest via the provided email addresses for the respective police areas. The application deadline is January 19, 2024. For more information on the training and the application process, visit polisen.se/dpu.
