The Pas-de-Calais prefecture evokes a “difficult and eventful guard”. In view of the facts related this Thursday evening by our colleagues from the Voix du Nord and France Bleu, it has indeed turned into a tragedy. An inmate from Herfaut prison, in Pas-de-Calais, managed to steal the weapon from a gendarme responsible for monitoring him before opening fire and seriously injuring him.
The precise circumstances of these facts are not yet known with precision. According to the two local media, the detainee had just been transferred the day before from Helfaut prison to be hospitalized. He could suffer from psychiatric disorders according to La Voix du Nord and would be in his twenties.
The facts would have occurred while the gendarmes were trying to control the individual, who appeared agitated. The scene would have taken place in a corridor located not far from the emergency room of the hospital. He was finally able to be brought under control and remains in the care of the hospital services. However, the days of the injured policeman would not be in danger. The Saint-Omer public prosecutor’s office has opened an investigation and a psychological cell has been set up, both for the gendarmes and for the caregivers.
