Government buses do not run

Trade unions across the country began a two-day strike yesterday, emphasizing 12-point demands, including the need to repeal the privatization law for public sector banks and companies, and condemning the federal government. Ninety percent of government buses at the Jayankondam State Transport Corporation office are not operating. Private buses ran as usual. At the Jayankondam Government Transport Corporation workshop, there were 92 buses, 475 drivers, 2 town buses with conductors and only 17 buses as 15 suburban buses. Udayarpalayam Revenue Commissioner Parimalam, Jayankondam Tashildar Anandan and Jayankondam Deputy Superintendent (Responsible) Rajan went to the Government Transport Corporation office and instructed Trichy Divisional Manager Karthikeyan and Workshop Branch Manager Ramkumar to run extra buses for school and college students. Police were engaged in heavy security work.

Moreover, the Jayankondam Post Office had earlier condemned the Central Government and sent letters to the TMC, CITU, AALF, LPF and HMS. Wickramangalam, Dhaka

More than 30 employees of the sub post office in Wickramangala and its 13 village branch post offices took part in the strike. Thus those post offices were locked. Wickramangala police were on security duty. Also, government buses plying from Ariyalur to Muthuvancheri and Sripuranthan via Wickramangala are not running. Only private buses operated. Students going to school and the general public who travel by bus daily were most affected.

Government employees went on strike at various offices of the public sector banks, union office, registry office and education office in Dhaka. Thus the service in the public sector banks was completely paralyzed. Works were halted as government officials went on strike in various offices. On behalf of the Department of Transport, buses were operated on time to travel from Jayangondam Workshop and Kumbakonam Workshops to school and college students. But at other times bus traffic was seen to be low. Thus the normal life of the public was affected.
