Products all over the world, Italy is at the top of the latest ranking of Taste Atlas with three of its excellences. In fact, on the podium of 100 best cheeses in the world cited by the international guide, appear in order Parmigiano Reggiano DOP, buffalo mozzarella DOP and Stracchino di Crescenza.

Italian cheeses, in fact, represent the most loved food product after desserts during the festive period. To estimate it is AFIDOPthe Italian PDO and PGI Cheese Association, processing NielsenIQ data on purchases by Italians in large-scale retail trade.

The driving force are the great Italian DOP cheeses, Grana Padano and Parmigiano Reggiano in the lead (+13% compared to the average sales of the rest of the year) – among the most consumed cheeses at Christmas and especially loved in whole pieces (+33% ) – but also sliced ​​Fontina (+37%), Gorgonzola (+9%), Taleggio and Asiago tied (+4%), followed by Pecorino Romano and Mozzarella di Bufala Campana.

A trend that knows no crisis: already in 2022 cheeses were on the podium of favorite holiday products. A heritage to be explored, which matters 56 denominations from North to South of the countryfor 4.68 billion euros of production value, which represents 59% of the value of Italian PDO, PGI and SGT food.

There is also a growing trend for cheese platters offered as they are, or offered for tasting together with jams, marmalades, mustards or mustards, which bring elegance and gourmandise to tables: it is no coincidence that “enriched” cheeses are also popular (+251%) and those elaborated with spices (+8%).

Whatever your favorite cheese, it is good to remember to store it at the correct temperature to avoid waste and, furthermore, a product that is no longer very fresh can become the perfect ingredient for flavoring and binding risottos, meatballs or baked pasta.
