Pacer Pat Cummins could be the next captain of Cricket Australia. Selectors George Bailey, Tony Dodmaid and Chief Executive Nick Hawkley were interviewed by members of the committee. Steve Smith will also be considered for the Test vice-captain position. Cummins will lead Australia in the Ashes series. The fast bowler will take over as Australia’s captain years later.

Payne’s resignation as captain just before the Ashes series was a major setback for Australia. Tim Payne resigned as captain in 2017 following the recent release of obscene messages sent to a colleague.
Payne did not want to resign, according to the Australian Cricket Association. The association said it was a personal matter between the two. But Cricket Australia accepted Payne’s resignation.
