About one in six permanent drug users in the Netherlands has little or no contact with a healthcare provider about that use, says the Dutch Patient Federation based on its own research among almost 9,000 people. Doctors and pharmacists should be more alert to contact with drug users.

“As far as we are concerned, everyone who takes medicines for more than a year should have an annual discussion about that medicine use. Call it a medicine MOT,” says Dianda Veldman, director of the Patient Federation of the Netherlands. This is not the first time that this has been argued.

Possible adjustment of use can be better for the health of the patient and prevent waste.
