He cancer it can be “terrifying”, not so much for what it means but for what it implies; exhausting procedures, physically and emotionally. However, there is hope. A cell therapy, which apparently has managed to cure a man of advanced cancer.

This news has shaken the specialized media on the subject. Especially for the testimony of Paul Pilgrim, who, at 61, had been fighting cancer for 13 years and almost lost the battle. Since he was about to receive palliative care (care to make the death process as dignified and less painful as possible).

However, his story was different. In April, she joined the Anvisa clinical study, a treatment that in just one month achieved almost 100% remission of the cancer.

Where is this treatment from?

This protocol, and success story, is located in Brazil. The research is carried out by the University of Sao Paulowith the collaboration of the Butantan Institute and the Ribeirao Blood Center.

So far, 14 patients have been treated; all with a remission of 60% of the tumors. It is expected that, in the second stage of the analysis, 75 patients will be attended and similar results will be achieved.

How this technique works

This cell therapyr, also called CAR-T Cell. It consists of collecting T-type defense lymphocytes from patients. These are “soldiers” of the immune system, which are taken to the laboratory to be genetically altered.

By being modified, cells have the ability to recognize cancer, invade it, and kill it without affecting normal or healthy cells in the body. Basically, the patient’s own cells are trained to attack her cancer.

Is this cell therapy for all types of cancer?

Not for the moment. The method is directed to combat only three types of cancer:

1- B lymphoblastic leukemia. A rapidly evolving type of blood cancer. The most common type is acute lymphoblastic leukemia, describes the National Cancer Institute.
2- B-cell non-Hodgkin lymphoma. It grows rapidly in the lymph nodes and usually affects the spleen, liver, and bone marrow.
3- Multiple myeloma. This type of cancer begins in plasma cells.

Although the results are encouraging. This therapy has a not very flattering side, the production of this cell is complex and very expensive, approximately 2 million per patient is required, not counting hospitalization costs.
However, it is expected that by demonstrating its effectiveness, companies and governments will support its production, therefore in the hope of saving millions of lives.
