Patient with skin diphtheria in shelter

by time news

The refugee had a wound that was infected, but no respiratory symptoms. A laboratory examination revealed the diphtheria bacterium in the wound. The pathogen was not found in the throat, so the chance of further spreading is small. The patient’s contacts were also tested. They had no complaints and all tested negative. The contacts who were not sufficiently vaccinated received a vaccination against diphtheria.

Europa

Until the end of last month, diphtheria had already been diagnosed in 92 refugees in Europe. No infection was found in the Netherlands this year. Although there is worldwide vaccination against the pathogen, due to war, among other things, the vaccination programs in some countries are not carried out or only to a limited extent, as a result of which the diphtheria bacterium continues to circulate. In the Netherlands, vaccination against diphtheria has been part of the National Immunization Program since 1957. Diphtheria only occurs sporadically in the Netherlands. Sometimes people contract diphtheria while traveling to a country where diphtheria still occurs.

Infection

Diphtheria is a contagious serious disease. Skin diphtheria causes ulcers on the skin. These are usually treatable with antibiotics. If the airways become infected, the disease can lead to severe breathlessness. The heart muscle and nerves can also be damaged. Fully vaccinated people can still get skin diphtheria, but are protected against severe disease.
