(ANSA) – NEW YORK, 02 MAY – Paul Auster‘s wife. who died in recent days, she believes her family was “robbed” of their “dignity” after a friend quickly confirmed the writer’s death to the media. “I was naive, but I imagined that I would be the one to announce my husband’s death,” Siri Hustvedt wrote on Instagram. “He died with us, his family, we were with him on April 30th at 6.58pm. A few hours later – he continues – I discovered that even before the body was taken away from the house the news of his death was circulating in the media and obituaries had been published.” The New York Times – the first media outlet to announce Auster’s death – cited family friend and American journalist Jacki Lyden as a source. Hustvedt makes no direct reference to her or the newspaper in her message, but she laments that she was unable to call or email loved ones to notify them before they found out from the media.
