Pastor and writer Paul Washer underwent heart surgery and is recovering well, although the post-operative period is expected to be very cautious.

Paul Washer has a history of heart problems: in 2017 he suffered a heart attack at home and needed to undergo emergency surgery to unblock an artery. The doctors who treated him considered the case extremely serious, but the pastor recovered well from the intervention.

During his time in hospital, Paul Washer took the opportunity to preach to everyone in the hospital, including even the health establishment’s chaplains.

In 2022, the 62-year-old pastor had a conference in São Paulo, where he would preach alongside other great international preachers, such as Steven Lawson, Josh Buice and Justin Peters, but he had to be hospitalized due to severe chest pain.

Washer founded the HeartCry Missionary Society in 1988 during his time as a missionary in Peru. The entity issued a statement stating that the surgery was necessary to improve blood flow to the heart muscle: “The surgery was successful and heart function is good. Praise be to God for His mercy and grace. Please continue to pray for Brother Paul’s healing and recovery.”

“We continue to ask for your prayers for a full recovery in the months to come. We are humbled and grateful for the tremendous prayer support received. The messages of love and encouragement for Brother Paul and our family from around the world have been a tangible blessing and a testimony to the love of Christ,” adds the use.

A testimony

After recovering from a heart attack in 2017, Paul Washer published an article in the magazine of the missionary organization he founded, describing the moments of suffering due to the health problem:

“Without warning, I collapsed unconscious on the kitchen floor. I have no memory of what happened until five days later, when I found myself in a hospital room,” she contextualized.

“When I asked what happened, someone said, ‘You died three times.’ My heart stopped and was revived on three separate occasions. […] During my stay in the hospital, the pain in my ribs was intense due to cardiac resuscitation”, recalled the pastor.

The memory lapse and mental confusion caused by the unconscious period resulted in other complications: “The damaged neuroreceptors in my brain (due to lack of oxygen) made me feel like my skin was on fire. The most subtle movements resulted in intense pain. Due to the loss of my short-term memory, I almost drove my wife crazy by asking the same questions over and over again,” she described.

Master of Divinity at the Southwest Baptist Theological Seminary, Paul Washer became known worldwide after a sermon preached at a Baptist conference for approximately five thousand young people in 2002.

The sermon, which became known as “Shocking Preaching”, attracted several million views on YouTube, receiving subtitles in several languages. In the message, he says that many of those who call themselves followers of Jesus will probably be in hell at the end of their lives.

“I’m here and I’m not worried, in my heart, about your self-esteem. I’m not bothered, in my heart, about whether or not you’re going to feel good about yourself, whether life is turning out how you want it to be, or whether or not your checkbook is balanced. There’s only one thing that gave me a sleepless night. There’s only one thing that’s bothered me all morning, and that’s this: within a hundred years, a vast majority of the people in this building will, quite possibly, be in hell. And many who, even professing Jesus Christ as Lord, will spend eternity in hell”, he says, in the introduction to the sermon.
