Paula Badosa, the first Spaniard in the WTA ranking, has decided to end her season, due to little improvement in the injury she suffered in Rome and which has practically prevented her from playing since then. The Spanish suffered a stress fracture in the Italian tournament and she was unable to participate in Roland Garros and in Wimbledon she did it while convalescing.

She has not been able to compete on the cement tour and although she was signed up for the US Open and was going to make her debut on Tuesday against Venus Williams, Badosa has decided not to force and put an end to the season.

«After struggling for many months to compete again, I end my season. Those of you who know me know how much I like to compete and how difficult it has been to make this decision. We have tried everything together with my team, but the pain is not letting me move forward, “he said in a statement.

The only positive news for the Spaniard is that she barely defends points in the final stretch of the season, so the impact on the ranking will be minimal. In 2022 she made the second round at the US Open and San Diego, her only victories from September onwards.

The withdrawal means that Anabel Medina will not be able to count on her for the Billie Jean King Cup Finals that will be held in Seville. Spain will not have, therefore, neither Garbiñe Muguruza, on permanent vacation, nor Badosa, and will have to resort, as in other calls, to Sara Sorribes, a recent winner in Cleveland, Nuria Párrizas, Cristina Bucsa and Rebeka Masarova.

Badosa’s absence leaves only three Spanish representatives in the women’s draw. Bucsa, who will play against the Czech Petra Kvitova; Sorribes, who will face the Ukrainian Anhelina Kalinina; and Masarova, who will face the Greek Maria Sakkari.
