Paulo Fonseca’s Lille left their visit to Aston Villa with a defeat (1-2), but with their hopes intact of turning the tie around in the 2nd leg. A late goal from Diakité (84′) kept the Dogues – with Tiago Santos in the eleven – happy in the semi-finals, putting a seal of justice after a balanced 2nd half. The English opened the scoring early through Watkins (13′). McGinn doubled in the 56th minute. Gudmunsson even celebrated (63′) for Lille, but VAR disallowed the goal for offside.
