jpnn.com – Telegram CEO Pavel Durov was arrested and detained by French security authorities, near Paris on Saturday (24/8) evening.
Pavel was considered by French security authorities to be negligent and not paying attention to platform moderation on his services, which allowed criminal activity to continue to have an impact.
Regarding the incident, Telegram stated that its CEO and founder, Pavel Durov, had nothing to hide.
“It is absurd to claim that the platform or its owners are responsible for the misuse of the platform,” Telegram said in a statement Sunday.
French officials have confirmed to several media outlets that Durov was arrested as part of a police investigation into criminal activity on the social network.
While unencrypted by default, Telegram’s largely unpoliced approach to moderation has led to the app being seen by many as a more private, censorship-free alternative.
“Nearly one billion users worldwide use Telegram as a means of communication, and as a source of important information,” Telegram said in a statement.
Telegram has also become an important source of information for the ongoing war between Ukraine and Russia, with the latter apparently taking a keen interest in Durov’s fate.
