Pavel Doubts Minister Nominee’s Explanation, Cites Authentic Social Media Posts

czech President Petr Pavel expressed skepticism regarding the explanation offered by Filip Turk, the nominee for Minister of the Environment, concerning controversial social media posts. Pavel indicated he believes most of the statements attributed to Turk are authentic, casting further doubt on the prospective minister’s suitability for office.

President Pavel voiced his concerns during a public debate held in Česká Lípa on Thursday, reiterating his willingness to meet with Turk despite the ongoing controversy. The nominee has faced intense scrutiny over past racist and homophobic posts on social media, offering an apology while concurrently denying authorship of some of the material.

“I confess that I don’t really believe the story about the borrowing of a mobile phone by unknown friends in a pub, so I consider most of those statements to be authentic, and so I think that they are entirely incompatible with the approach and behavior of the minister of the government of a democratic country,” the president stated during the discussion.

Pavel had previously signaled reservations about Turk’s potential appointment, and on Thursday, expanded on those concerns, stating that the problematic social media activity wasn’t his sole objection. Further complicating the situation, reports have surfaced detailing an incident from eight years ago in which Turk allegedly threatened an employee of the Saudi Arabian embassy. He also drew criticism for a threat made against a political opponent during a November 17 commemoration, reportedly stating he would “slap in his face.”

Turk was absent from the presentation due to reported health issues, with Petr macinka, chairman of the Motorists party and likely future foreign Minister, positioned to possibly lead the Ministry of the Environment in his stead. President Pavel is scheduled to formally appoint Babiš’s government in its proposed composition on Monday.

Despite the looming appointment, Pavel remains open to a meeting with Turk. “Weather it happens or not is up to Filip Turk. The moment he recovers and asks for a meeting,I will certainly not refuse it,” the president affirmed on Thursday. Turk was originally scheduled to meet with Pavel this Monday as the final ministerial candidate to undergo consultations. However, he apologized on sunday, citing a herniated disc and strong pain medication as the reason for his absence, according to Boris Šťastný, chairman of the Motorist deputies.

Turk later released a video on social media expressing hope that the President would understand his medical condition. “I hope t
