jpnn.comJAKARTA – PBNU appealed to the entire community, especially Nahdlatul Ulama (NU) members and Islamic boarding school students not to be provoked by the clashes that are currently occurring.

Lately, clashes between santri and the police have been widely heard. On social media, there is a movement of buzzers to make the hashtag #santrimenolakpolisi viral.

“So far, the relationship between the Police and the santri has been very good. Moreover, the Chief of Police, General Sigit, is very respectful of the kiai,” said PBNU Chairman Abdullah Latopada in a written statement to journalists, Tuesday (3/9).

According to him, the hashtag was riding on the issue of the police breaking up the demonstration with tear gas. Because, some of them hit several students who were around the location.

“For the tear gas case, I think the National Police through the Head of Public Relations of the Central Java Regional Police have apologized and visited the location. So don’t make this a big deal with the aim of pitting NU students against the National Police,” he said.

He further explained that the relationship between the Police and students, especially NU students and Islamic boarding schools, is very good. The Police always synergize in every student activity.

“Personally, the Chief of Police is very respectful of the kiai. He often visits to ask for input and suggestions from the NU kiai. So it is very unlikely that the police have any intention of being hostile to the santri,” he said.

He added that the Chief of Police is also very close to anyone. Moreover, General Sigit is currently very easy to meet and talk to.

PBNU asked the students and NU members not to be provoked into clashes with the Police.
