The main sporting event of the year – the Olympic Games in Tokyo – brought the national sport and the most serious fall in the medal standings of its national team in the history of the Summer Olympics – to fifth place – and together with it, oddly enough, it seems, the strongest consensus on positivity the direction in which it is moving.
