Those of us who have lived in Ecuador since the mid-20th century feel how difficult it was to overcome the border problem. It seemed like it was going to be a painful legacy that we were going to leave to future generations. There was constant preparation for a war, which could be provoked at any moment. Wars produce hatred between people and prevent their development. Weapons sellers take advantage of the psychological aspects of human groups.

On October 28, 25 years passed since the signing of peace with Peru. There were few commemorative events. But, for those of us who live and work with a long-term vision, this fact was very important. A series of conflicting ideas were overcome. On the one hand, there was the idea that Ecuadorian territory one day reached the Amazon River and that we should not give up on it. On the other hand, there was the desire to live in peace, even if it was in a small territory.

The successive governments of: Borja, Sixto, Bucaram, Alarcón and Jamil Mahuad, were determined to achieve peace. The majority of the people became aware that it was time to close the border with Peru. It was up to Mahuad to sign the peace. Also, it should be noted that during the governments of Roldós and Hurtado the armed forces were equipped. During the Hurtado government, with great economic effort, fleets of Kafir and Mirage aircraft were acquired, which gave victory in Cenepa in 1995 and influenced Peru to seek peace. It was a State policy, beyond the political ideologies of the right or left. The current and future generations must rescue this history to understand that to live it is necessary to govern the country with long-term state policies.
