The Manabita doctor was a promoter of the fight against malaria and malaria in Ecuador

Soon, the Basic Hospital of Pedernales located in the province of Manabí will be inaugurated. The health house will be named Dr. Francisco Vásquez Balda as a postmortem tribute to the first Director of Health in that province. In addition, for being the promoter of the Health program called the Comprehensive Health Program (PISMA) for Manabí, which is currently known as Health Centers.

The Ministry of Public Health received thanks, through a letter, from their relatives “for making the construction and completion of the hospital a reality for the town of Pedernales and the surrounding areas of the north of Manabí.” In addition, for “postmortem honoring Dr. Francisco Vásquez Balda as patron of the Basic Hospital of Pedernales.”

Dr. Francisco Vásquez Balda had a track record of accomplishments in his career as a physician. After obtaining a master’s degree in Public Health in the United States, he returned to the country to focus his research on the fight against Malaria and Malaria. In this context, he was National Executive Director in the Fight against Malaria in Ecuador and became Consultant Physician of the Pan American Health Organization in 1967.

The also scientist and writer stood out with his work “Half a century of antimalarial activities in Ecuador, period 1957-2006” with which he won the scientific contest of the then National Institute of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine ‘Leopoldo Izquieta Pérez’. The Manabí doctor, born in Portoviejo in 1914, was a member of the first board of the Manabí College of Physicians, with the position of vice president.
