Mads Pedersen (Lidl-Trek) won the 8ᵉ stage of the Tour de France in the sprint on Saturday July 8 in Limoges after having resisted well the acceleration of Jasper Philipsen, in a stage marked by the abandonment on fall of Mark Cavendish. Dane Jonas Vingegaard retains the yellow jersey.

This time, Jasper Philipsen, already winner of three massive sprints on this Grande Boucle 2023, could not do anything. The Alpecin-Deceunick runner was blown away by the sprint launched by Mads Pedersen 300m from the finish. In the home straight uphill, Pedersen, 2019 world champion, resisted the return of the Belgians Philipsen and Wout Van Aert whom he beat, in that order.

This is the second victory in the Tour de France for the 27-year-old Dane after that won last year in Saint-Etienne. By winning in force, he broke Philipsen’s series which remained on three victories in three sprints on this Tour. Another Dane, Jonas Vingegaard, retains the yellow jersey on the eve of the highly anticipated summit finish at Puy-de-Dôme, which is returning to the Tour after 35 years of absence.

Cavendish gave up

The other big news from this race is the heartbreaking abandonment of Mark Cavendish, on the verge of retirement, who was aiming to beat the record for stage victories in the Tour de France that he holds with Eddy Merckx ( 34 successes both). For his last Tour, the sprinter from the Isle of Man, 38, fell in the middle of the peloton about sixty kilometers from the finish. Holding his right shoulder, the Astana runner climbed into the ambulance with tears in his eyes.
