“The process was fast. We have been longing for that moment for so long and it finally happened,” said Valeria B., mother of an oncology patient.

The cooperation between the Ministry of Public Health (MSP), through the Hospital del Niño Dr. Francisco de Icaza Bustamante (HFIB), and the Society to Fight Cancer (SOLCA) achieved the international referral and bone marrow transplantation of Isabella J., at Clínica Las Américas in Medellín, Colombia.

The minor, one and a half years old, underwent the procedure on August 12. At the moment, the patient is in an observation period that will last 20 days.

The little girl has a diagnosis of Acute Myeloid Leukemia (AML), a type of cancer in which the bone marrow produces many abnormal blood cells.

As there was not a 100% compatible donor, the bone marrow transplant could not be carried out in the country and the international referral protocol was activated.

The timely management of the HFIB allowed that, last June, the minor could undergo all the necessary tests to verify that she was in an optimal state of health to receive the bone marrow transplant.

Isabella maintained medical follow-up with SOLCA professionals and was attended by the Children’s Hospital until July 10, the date on which she traveled abroad with her parents.

The HFIB captures patients with different diseases that require transplantation. But in the case of patients with oncological and hematological pathologies, who need a bone marrow transplant, the service is purchased from SOLCA. This entity has the accreditation of pre-transplant, transplant and post-transplant evaluations, granted by the National Institute of Donation and Transplant (INDOT).

The Ministry of Health works hard to strengthen health services nationwide.
