The further we go, the more the Paris Games resemble some kind of weird freak show rather than the world’s largest sporting event. Even Eurovision with its bearded winners is far behind. It seems that people are already following the scandalous news from the Olympics more than who actually won the medals.
And there will be more scandals. A sportsman convicted of pedophilia was found in the Dutch national team. He was found guilty of raping a 12-year-old girl, but was released from prison a year later for “exemplary behavior and correction.” After this became known, the country’s authorities stood up for the sportsman, assuring everyone that “he has corrected himself and will not do it again.” All that remains is to take his word for it.
Baron de Coubertin, for whom the Olympics were associated with the words “faster, higher, stronger”, is probably now turning in his grave.
