Barcelona midfielders Pedro González ‘Pedri’ and Frenkie de Jong suffer an injury to the rectus femoris of their right leg and a sprain to the external lateral ligament of their right ankle, respectively, as reported this Monday by the Catalan club’s medical services.

Both were injured in the LaLiga match that the Barça team played this Sunday, March 3 in San Mamés against Athletic Club (0-0).

Pedri already injured the rectus femoris of the same leg in training at the beginning of the season, an ailment that kept him out for almost two and a half months and forced him to miss twelve games.

Against Athletic he broke down again after trying to make a long run and was replaced, in tears, by Lamine Yamal in the 45th minute.

Nor is it the first physical setback of the course for De Jong, who spent almost two months in the dry dock after injuring, in the LaLiga match against Celta, the distal tibioperoneal syndesmosis of his right ankle, the same one that was damaged yesterday in the capital Biscay.

The Dutchman, who then missed a dozen games, lasted 26 minutes on the field yesterday, which took him twisting his ankle in a fortuitous play before being replaced by Fermín.

Although Barça did not want to specify the time of absence, it seems that both players will not be available in the coming weeks, coinciding with the demanding schedule that the team will have this month of March.

And Xavi Hernández’s men will play three league games against Mallorca, Atlético de Madrid and Las Palmas and will play for a place in the quarterfinals of the Champions League against Naples, on Tuesday the 12th, at the Lluís Companys Olympic Stadium.
