The acting President of the Government, Pedro Sánchez, pronounces the word amnesty for the first time. It was and continues to be one of the demands of the Catalan independence political parties, however, the socialist leader avoided it.

He did not pronounce it before the investiture debate of the Popular Party candidate, Alberto Núñez Feijóo. Nor during the debate. He didn’t even speak. He delegated his turn to speak and reply to Óscar Puente.

It was this Friday in Granada, during a press conference for the European summit being held in the city of the Alhambra, when Pedro Sánchez, accompanied by the president of the European Council, Charles Michel, and the president of the Commission, Úrsula von der Leyen has said the following:

“We know Sumar’s proposal, as we also know the proposal of other parties in relation to the amnesty, which is still a way of trying to overcome the judicial consequences of the situation that Spain experienced with one of the worst territorial crises in “the history of democracy in 2017. But I also want to say that it is not the PSOE’s proposal. It is not the PSOE’s position.”

Furthermore, he has stated that he is working for a “royal investiture” after King Felipe VI proposed him as a candidate for the Presidency after Feijóo’s failed attempt, which did not obtain sufficient support. “The duty of all parties is to try to work to understand each other and achieve a Government for Spain as soon as possible. And that is what I am doing,” he assured.

Yes, the amnesty is being negotiated. But at the moment the President of the Executive cannot offer more details. “I cannot anticipate an agreement until it occurs – that agreement – because we are in full negotiation (…) the agreements will be known when they are finalized, that is, there will be no agreement until everything is agreed. It’s that simple,” explained Pedro Sánchez.

He has also assured that he will guarantee that the agreement is “absolutely transparent, public” and that the objective is “to make policies of progress, of coexistence within the framework of the Constitution.”

This is Sumar’s amnesty proposal, rejected by PSOE

Yolanda Díaz’s party, Sumar, advocates an amnesty for all people linked to criminal or administrative infractions related to the independence process in Catalonia from January 2013 until the present.

In addition, it leaves the door open to a referendum. Another of the demands of ERC and Junts, who raised the price of their votes. The second vice president of the Government has announced that her party will present her legal opinion on the “fit of the amnesty” in the constitutional framework on Tuesday at 7:00 p.m. at the Ateneu Barcelonès in Barcelona.

The acting Minister of the Presidency, Félix Bolaños, has assured that this report of conclusions for a possible amnesty is an “undoubtedly respectable document, but it is not the position of the PSOE.”

Meanwhile, Junts affirms that Sumar has already conveyed its proposal for an amnesty law within the framework of the negotiations to invest Pedro Sánchez and that it has committed to studying it.
