Granada is prepared to host this Thursday and Friday the two summits of European leaders that the acting Government considers to be the main milestone of the Spanish presidency. Moncloa hopes that they will be a turning point to decide together the future of a Europe that can lead and respond to global challenges.

European political community

The first summit, this October 5, is that of the young European Political Community, a dialogue forum that brings together heads of State and Government of the 27 countries of the Union and 17 other countries on the continent.

They will discuss issues of common interest, especially in the face of the war in Ukraine, a country that is part of this group, but without the presence of its president, Volodymyr Zelensky, at this meeting having been confirmed for security reasons. Kosovo, a territory that Spain and four other EU partners do not recognize as a country, will also be represented.

Informal EU summit

The next day, this Friday, the informal meeting of the heads of State and Government of the 27 member countries of the European Union will be held, who will analyze the enlargement to other partners and the reforms that would be necessary in that case, in addition to the migration pact. finally unlocked and the strategic autonomy of the bloc.

At this summit, Spain will present the proposal that it has been preparing with the collaboration of the rest of the countries and whose general lines were presented by Sánchez last month. Its commitment is to reindustrialize the European Union, reinforce leadership in strategic sectors such as energy or health and focus on goods and services in which Europe is already competitive, such as artificial intelligence, wind turbines or organic fertilizers.

The acting president and the kings, hosts

As host of the two summits, Sánchez will receive each of the participants on both days and will make joint appearances, on the first day with the British Prime Minister, Rishi Sunak and Maia Sandu, president of Moldova.

At that event he will participate in one of the three round tables planned for the meeting, which will be dedicated to multilateralism and which will be added to one on digitalization and another on energy. After the Twenty-Seven summit on Friday, he will hold a press conference alongside the President of the Council, Charles Michel, and the President of the Commission, Ursula von der Leyen.

On the occasion of the presence in Granada of fifty heads of State and Government, the kings will offer them an official dinner after receiving all of them on Thursday night at the Alhambra.

The dinner that the kings will offer in the Alhambra will be served by the Córdoba chef Paco Morales, who has prepared a menu with an Andalusian flavor. The Ministry of the Presidency has awarded the contract for almost 140,000 euros. In addition, the leaders and their companions will enjoy a show.

Safety device

Around 5,000 agents make up the security device that will protect the Granada Congress Palace and the Alhambra, the two venues for the event. In addition, air traffic and the Federico García Lorca airport will be closed to serve exclusively official delegations.
