Pedro Sánchez receives the King of Jordan in Moncloa and closes two agreements

The President of the Government, Pedro Sánchez, held a meeting at the Moncloa Palace with King Abdalá II of Jordan, who is on an official visit to Spain. After the meeting, both leaders attended the signing of two agreements, a Memorandum of Understanding between the ministries of Justice of both countries and an agreement on the recognition of maritime navigation certificates.

The King of Jordan is making an official visit to Spain as part of the Aqaba Process meeting, which is being held in Córdoba and co-chaired by King Felipe VI.

In addition, both countries have adopted a joint declaration that reflects the intention of both countries to enhance their bilateral relations and work to establish a strategic partnership. In this regard, they have agreed to coordinate the efforts of the Jordanian Co-Presidency of the Union for the Mediterranean and the Spanish rotating Presidency of the EU to continue strengthening their relations.

They have also addressed the situation in Ukraine and reaffirmed their commitment to Ukraine’s sovereignty and territorial integrity, in accordance with its internationally recognized borders. Both have agreed on the importance of continuing to work for a comprehensive, just and lasting peace.

Spain and Jordan have also reiterated their commitment to the development of a stronger multilateral system and an international order based on rules to face global challenges.

On the other hand, Sánchez took an interest in the current situation in the Middle East, and highlighted the “key stabilizing role” that Jordan plays in the region. Thus, both countries have reiterated the importance of the centrality of Euro-Mediterranean relations as a tool for shared prosperity and stability in the region.

In this context, Sánchez highlighted the efforts that Jordan has made for decades to deal with the successive regional refugee crises.

It has also confirmed that Spain will participate in the 2023 Global Forum on Refugees that Jordan is currently co-chairing, and has reiterated its commitment to the Global Compact on Refugees. In this sense, both leaders have agreed to continue their support to UNHCR, in order to protect people forced to flee their homes.

After the meeting between the two leaders, President Sánchez and King Abdalá II attended the signing of two agreements: a Memorandum of Understanding between the Ministries of Justice of Spain and Jordan, and an Agreement on the recognition of maritime navigation certificates.
