The President of the Government, Pedro Sánchez, will visit the White House on May 12 “to continue strengthening the historical ties between Spain and the United States.” This was confirmed this Wednesday by the White House spokeswoman, Karine Jean-Pierre.
The purpose of the meeting between the head of the Spanish Executive and the president of the United States, Joe Biden, will be to address and analyze the situation of the war in Ukraine and to strengthen bilateral relations in the area of defence, transatlantic security and economic prosperity.
In the same way, both leaders will review cooperation with Latin America and the Caribbean and the way to face together global challenges such as the climate emergency, “the defense of democracy and an international order based on rules.”
For its part, Moncloa has remarked that this meeting will deepen the existing relationship between two “friends, strategic partners and allies” countries.
First visit to the White House
It will be the first time that Sánchez has traveled to the US presidential palace in the almost five years that he has been in charge of the Government.
Curiously, this meeting between the leaders, which takes place almost a year after the meeting of both in Moncloa on the occasion of the NATO summit, will coincide with the start of the campaign of the next municipal and regional elections on May 28, which Sánchez had planned to start in Seville.
Finally, the socialist leader will be in Seville upon his return from the official trip to the US, on Sunday, May 13, together with the mayor and socialist candidate in that city, Antonio Muñoz.
Renew the strategic relationship
It was at the end of June of last year when Biden and Sánchez promised to strengthen collaboration on numerous matters of interest “with a common desire to preserve and promote the values of freedom, democracy, human rights, gender equality and the Rule of law”.
