A new Dominican talent jumps on the scene to fill the Dominican Republic with pride. The prestigious Instituto Superior de Arte del Teatro Colón (ISATC) in Argentina has just graduated Pedro Soriano Martínez from his dance career, the first classical dancer from the Caribbean country to graduate from this artistic institution.

Pedro Julio Soriano Martinez, 19 years old, began her foray into dance when she was only 9 years old inside the Dominican Concert Ballet Academy.

“Pedro was studying Olympic gymnastics. when i found out that the teacher Carlos Veitía would hold auditions so that children with dance skills to learn ballet, I immediately thought of my son,” says his mother, Dulce Aymará Martínez.

“He was always dancing and jumping. He was a hyperactive kid with a lot of personality and was even featured in several local TV commercials. In the family we called him ‘the artist’”, affirms his mother.

With the support of his parents, Pedro won the “Clara Elena Ramírez” scholarship from Ballet Concierto Dominicano.

For a year she prepared by the hand of Carlos Veitía and teachers from her dance team. Since then, he has dedicated his life to honing his skills to become a professional dancer.

“I got into ballet because the opportunity presented itself and it was fun for me,” explains Pedro.

difficult dream

After Pedro started classical dance in his country, his family decided to move to Argentina, partly because his mother is from that South American nation. Already installed in the city of Buenos Aires, they settled in an apartment near the Teatro Colón with the motivation of helping the boy enter a dance career.

However, when they approached ISATC, they were informed that Pedro was a few months over the maximum age to enter the First Year of the dance career.

His only hope of entry would be to compete to be accepted to the Third Year of the race. Admission to ISATC is quite demanding and entails exhaustive preparation, even for First Year.

Soriano Martínez’s challenge was even greater because, to enter Third Year, he had to pass several exams not only in ballet, but also in music and French, subjects he had never taken.

With the help of several tutors, the boy prepared himself in these subjects. The physical and ballet training was carried out at the Olga Ferri Studio by renowned masters of classical dance.

In December 2016, after two months of intense preparation, Pedro Soriano Martínez participated in the ISATC entrance auditions together with young applicants from all over Argentina and the world. Of the hundreds of participating children, only one girl and two boys entered, including Pedro.

determination test

From that moment on, Soriano Martínez’s life changed. Like all young athletes, his routine became intense and demanding. Apart from his responsibilities at ISATC, the young man studied high school in person in parallel to his dance career.

Day after day he would leave at dawn, sometimes during the intense winters of Buenos Aires, to receive his rigorous training at the Institute, then he would go to the school at noon to take afternoon classes. Pedro’s determination is also reflected in his academic phase, since he released all his school subjects and graduated from high school last December.

During his time in the ISATC Dance Program, Pedro not only received Classical Dance Technique training. His preparation also includes Folk Dance, Repertoire, Contemporary, Partenaire, Jazz, Characterization, History of Dance, Musical Language, Anatomy applied to Dance, among other subjects. The Dance Career lasts 8 years and presents a level of complexity equivalent to any other profession, whose purpose is to polish new artists who participate in the productions of the Teatro Colón and serve as reinforcement to their stable ballet.

Projects and presentations

While he was studying, Pedro Soriano Martínez participated in several productions organized by ISATC, as well as other independent theater presentations.

Among these are: “The Dancers do not speak”, June 2018 at the Experimentation Center of the Teatro Colón; “The Nutcracker” by Tchaikovsky, December 2018 at the Teatro Colón; “Disney in Concert: Movie Symphonies”, February 2019 at the Teatro Colón; “Armida”, opera with baroque choreography, December 2019 at the 25 de Mayo Cultural Center; “The Nutcracker”, a reinvention of the classic for children by the Konex Foundation and the Art and Culture Association, July 2022 at the Konex Cultural Center; and “Las Bodas de Aurora”, the third act of “The Sleeping Beauty of the Forest”, September 2022 by the students of the ISATC Dance Career.

Currently Pedro Soriano Martínez participates in auditions and continues his physical training.

His immediate goal is to enter the Permanent Ballet of the Teatro Colón, but he assures that his dream is to belong to an institution that allows him to dance all his life and become a world-class dancer.

“I know my ability and I know that I will find success in everything I set my mind to,” Pedro assures in his words.

“Now, I like dancing. I want to live from dance, wherever, because it is what makes me happy, ”she adds.
