Penalty kicks make Iraq smile and win the King’s Cup of Thailand

Baghdad / Obelisk Al-Hadath: The Iraqi national team achieved victory over its Thai counterpart at the end of the King’s Cup of Thailand, by a penalty shootout, 5-4, to crown the 49th championship title, as the first Arab team to win this tournament.

And the original time of the match ended with a positive draw 2-2, to go to a penalty shootout, which was decided in favor of the Lions of Mesopotamia.

The match took place in a heavy rainy atmosphere in the Thai city of Shanghai, at the 700th Anniversary Stadium, at 4:30 pm Baghdad time.

The first half ended in a positive tie with one goal for both teams. Iraq scored first through Ayman Hussein in the sixth minute, and Thailand’s Nicholas Mickelson managed to adjust the score with a header in the 37th minute.

In the second half, the second goal of the Iraqi team came through Amjad Atwan at the 65th minute of the match, and in the 80th minute the referee awarded a questionable penalty kick, which was brilliantly answered by goalkeeper Fahd Talib, and with the same scenario as Thailand’s first goal, the land owners scored the goal of the amendment in the 82nd minute via Moored Budin Vala.

The Organizing Committee of the King of Thailand Championship, in agreement with the arbitration staff, decided to postpone the start date of the match for 15 minutes due to bad weather and heavy rain at the 700th Anniversary Stadium in Shanghai. The delay extended to nearly half an hour after the rain continued.
