/ The Syrian national team bid farewell to the Asian Championship today, Wednesday, after losing to the Iranian national team on penalties, 5-3, in the round of 16 of the Asian Football Cup, currently being held in Qatar.

The match took place at Abdullah bin Khalifa Stadium at 7 pm on Wednesday.

The first half ended with Iran leading by one goal to nil, scored from a penalty kick in the 34th minute by Mehdi Taremi.

In the second half, Syria scored the equaliser from a penalty kick successfully executed by Omar Khribin in the 64th minute.

In the 90+1 minute, the referee sent off the Iranian player Mehdi Taremi for accumulating cards, so Iran completed the match with ten players, and the regular time ended in a tie with one goal for each team, so the match went to two extra halves, which ended with the same result, and the match went to penalty kicks, and Iran achieved victory with a score of 5-3.

The Iranian team will meet its Japanese counterpart, who defeated Bahrain, in the quarter-finals on February 3 at the Education City Stadium in Doha.
