It would have hurt Bayern a lot. Shortly before the end of the game against Arsenal there was a questionable penalty scene.
Excitement in London. In the final minutes of the quarter-final first leg of the Champions League between FC Arsenal and FC Bayern (2:2) there was a debatable scene.
Arsenal’s Bukayo Saka races into Bayern’s penalty area in stoppage time, falls after contact with Manuel Neuer and screams. Penalty? Great excitement, but referee Glenn Nyberg whistles off the game shortly afterwards.
Curious: He could have asked the video referee even after the final whistle. As long as the referee is still on the field, this is permitted and possible. However, Nyberg decided not to do so; he immediately seemed to be very sure that it wasn’t a penalty.
And actually: In repetitions of the scene you can see that Saka consciously sought contact with Neuer. Bayern coach Thomas Tuchel also saw it this way: “He runs into Manu’s leg, no chance. The ball was gone.”
Expert Matthias Sammer agreed with Amazon after the final whistle: “No penalty. Saka first seeks contact with Neuer.” When asked by moderator Sebastian Hellmann, Sammer said again clearly: “No penalty.”
