A 39-year-old penitentiary officer (pa) in Suriname was recently arrested for posing as an official of the Economic Control Service (ECD) and extorting a shopkeeper.

After the shopkeeper offered illegal cigarettes to father Narish O. for sale, he demanded an amount from the shopkeeper to make things right. Posing as an inspector of the Economic Affairs department, the dad showed his service weapon with the intention of instilling fear in the shopkeeper.

The shopkeeper put an amount on the counter after which the dad took it and walked away towards his vehicle. In order not to be recognized, he had a face mask on.

A report was made on the matter, after which the father was arrested and taken into custody. His detention was recently extended by 30 days.

Investigation must show whether the suspect has victimized several shopkeepers. The investigation in this case is ongoing.
