The number of pensioners to whom reduction coefficients have been applied due to anticipation of their ordinary retirement age, having 40 or more years of contributions has fallen by half since 2021, going from 73,156 that year to 36,977 as of December 4, 2023, as revealed by the Government in a parliamentary response collected by the Europa Press agency.
In the total period, at a total of 186,917 pensioners have had a reduction coefficient applied to them after having contributed for 40 or more years.
The reducing coefficients serve to determine a person’s retirement when it occurs early, penalizing the amount that the worker will receive because he will receive it for a longer time than if he had taken advantage of the ordinary retirement.
Specifically, the pension that results, by application to the regulatory base of the corresponding percentage, will be subject to reduction through the application, for each year or fraction of a year that, at the time of the causative event, the worker is missing from reaching the age of 65. years. In the case of having 40 or more years of contributions, the percentage is 6%.

Catalonia is the autonomous community where these coefficients have been applied to the most people, with 42,933 pensioners, according to data from the National Security Institute provided in response to a question registered in Congress by Podemos deputy Martina Velarde.
To Catalonia Madrid followed, with 28,371 people; Valencian Community, with 21,159; Andalusia, with 18,149; and the Basque Country, with 14,302. On the other side of the coin were Melilla, with 80 pensioners; and Ceuta, with 136.
By sex, the majority of people with 40 years of contributions and an early pension were men in the three years analyzed. In 2021 there were 49,769 men compared to 23,387 women; in 2022 52,125 men compared to 24,669 women and in 2023 25,312 men compared to 11,655 women.
