The US Department of Defense does not comment on media reports about Israeli plans to conduct a ground military operation in Lebanon against the Shiite Hezbollah movement.
As Day.Az reports with reference to TASS, a Pentagon representative announced this.
“We cannot confirm anything at this time, but as representatives of the Department of Defense we can state that we do not comment on rumors or actual operational issues,” he said in response to a request for comment on The Washington Post (WP) story that Israel plans to conduct a limited ground military operation in Lebanon. “But we communicate with partners in the region,” the Pentagon spokesman emphasized. “In addition, we cannot confirm what other media decide to release into the information space.”
Earlier, The Washington Post reported that Israel warned the United States that it plans to conduct a limited ground operation in Lebanon against Hezbollah.
A new round of escalation of the conflict between Israel and Hezbollah began after a series of explosions of communication devices occurred in Lebanon on September 17 and 18. The movement blamed Israel for organizing the explosions, whose authorities did not directly comment on the incident, but announced the intensification of military operations in the northern direction. On September 23, Israel launched Operation Arrows of the North against Hezbollah forces in Lebanon, during which it carries out massive strikes on the movement’s military targets. The stated goal is to create safe conditions in the northern border areas of the Jewish state so that tens of thousands of residents can return there. As a result of one of the Israeli strikes on September 27, Hezbollah Secretary General Hassan Nasrullah was killed in Beirut.
