The US Department of Defense has published the Arctic Strategy 2024 on its website, Day.Az reports with reference to Interfax.

“The Arctic region of the United States is critical to the defense of our homeland, protecting U.S. national sovereignty, and meeting our defense treaty obligations. Our Arctic strategy will guide the department’s efforts to ensure that the Arctic remains a secure and stable region,” Deputy Defense Secretary Kathleen Hicks wrote in the foreword.

The strategy outlines the steps the Pentagon will take “working with our allies and partners to maintain the Arctic as a secure and stable region,” the document says.

The US military justifies the need to update the strategy by saying that “the Arctic region is undergoing rapid changes, both strategic and physical.”

In particular, the text states: “The activities of China and Russia in the Arctic, including their growing cooperation, NATO expansion, and the increasing impacts of climate change, are shaping a new, more dynamic Arctic security environment.”

It is noted that “these changes, as well as growing cooperation between Russia and China, could change the picture of stability and threats in the Arctic,” and they “provide the Department of Defense with opportunities to strengthen security in the region by deepening cooperation with allies and partners.”

The Pentagon’s new strategy calls for a “monitor and respond” approach to the Arctic, backed by cooperation with allies and partners and “the department’s ability to deploy joint forces around the world when and where we are.”

The strategy outlines three main areas of activity:

Expanding capabilities “to conduct Arctic campaigns, particularly in the areas of information, communications and intelligence, surveillance and reconnaissance.”

Working with allies and partners to “ensure Arctic defense and deterrence, enhance interoperability, and deepen understanding of how to operate in the region.”

Presence in the Arctic through continued conduct of both bilateral exercises in the region involving Arctic allies and multilateral exercises involving NATO special operations forces.
