The US Army recently began testing hypersonic weapons, the Pentagon told WarZone. The agency did not specify whether the tests were successful, what specific system was used, or even whether the missiles were launched, Day.Az reports, citing RBC.
Testing began at Cape Canaveral in Florida, where the US Space Force base is located and spacecraft launches are carried out.
“These tests were a significant milestone in the development of operational hypersonic technology, providing important hardware and software performance data that will support future progress in deploying hypersonic weapons,” the Pentagon spokesman added.
The U.S. Army has not specified the date of the test, but public warnings to airmen and sailors indicate it occurred on July 25, WarZone noted. That day, flight tracking enthusiasts reported the presence of missile tracking aircraft in the Cape Canaveral area, which were used in hypersonic missile test launches.
Previous U.S. hypersonic weapons tests have encountered several complications. In 2023, three rounds of tests were canceled due to launcher problems. This spring, new tests were conducted and completed successfully. The missile was launched from a B-52 strategic bomber that took off from the U.S. Andersen Air Force Base on the island of Guam in the Pacific Ocean.
Congress is confident that hypersonic weapons will not be delivered to the US Army before the 2025 fiscal year (begins October 1).
