A resident of a small village in the Ústí Region, whom the locals call Hedviko, opened a cafe in her garden during the coronavirus pandemic, where guests can snuggle with snow-white chickens. A place with good coffee, a bird zoo and several types of pancakes was originally supposed to cheer up acquaintances from the surrounding villages, but it soon got out of control. They learned about the garden not only in Ústí, but also in Prague.

“Above all, don’t do any advertising for us. After an influencer shot a video here, people waited for two hours for a pancake,” says the friendly cafe owner, explaining why she doesn’t want to show the name of the picturesque place in more detail on the map. “I do it for fun. But when there’s a rush, no one gets anything out of it. Then it can happen that I get soot and I close it here from day to day,” he adds.

It is Friday evening and she is sitting at the same table with her friends. She talks but often has to run off to serve guests. It is full and, in addition to Czech, you can also hear the language of the nearby neighbors. “The more prosecco, the more I can speak,” the cheerful owner reacts with exaggeration to a remark of her friend who praises her German.

It is clear that Hedvika is at home in the garden. She opened a stand with refreshments and picturesque corners near her family home four years ago due to the coronavirus pandemic. “We didn’t have a place to meet. And since I’m a soap maker and I work at home most of the time, it was offered to open something like this,” explains the owner of the magical place, which attracts people not only for the friendly atmosphere, but also for the snow-white friendly hens. It’s like you’re not even close to a domestic chicken. They look like little owls or cute cartoon characters.

“Mainly people from Prague come here for these. It’s as if they’ve never seen chickens,” laughs the village woman. “It’s an American type of silkworm. It was given to me by a friend who keeps them because they have some black feathers. But we don’t breed them, we pet them, so we don’t mind,” she explains, noting that at one time they lived with their daughter and silks all together. “It was January when we got them, so we had them in the living room. It makes them really pampered.”
