Utramerur, Aug. 31–

Near Uttramerur, the residents of the area protested against the new stone quarry and blocked the road yesterday.

Agricultural area
Kadamparnathar Kovil Village is under Uttaramerur Union, Aadhavappakkam Panchayat. Agriculture is the main occupation in this area on the banks of the river. In particular, cereal crops such as paddy, root cowpea, sesame and gram are widely cultivated. Also, vegetables such as kathari, ventai, banhu, papaya, putalai, garden crops like watermelon, kalyanabhusani, banana and flowering plants like jasmine, kanakambaram and marigold are cultivated throughout the year.

Land sale
The farmers of the area sold 4 acres of land in the middle of agricultural land in this village to a private company a few years ago. The residents of the area have been thinking that the private company has bought the land for farming. Meanwhile, the people of the area were informed that a stone quarry was going to be set up in that land a few months ago. While the preliminary work for setting up the quarry has started, a petition has been submitted to the Kanchipuram Collectorate and the Chief Minister’s Division on behalf of the residents of the area against the stone quarry. No action yet.

Roadblock
In this case, more than 200 people, including 100 women from the area, took part in a road blockade on Uttaramerur-Kanchipuram road, in front of Venkacherry bus stand. Kanchipuram District Revenue Officer Sivaruthrayya and Kanchipuram DSP, Uttar Merur Police came to the spot and engaged in peaceful talks with the protesters. The public urged them to immediately cancel the permission to set up the Kalquari. After the officials promised to take appropriate action in this regard, the public dispersed. Traffic in the area was affected for an hour.
