The “Žiburis” main school operated on Verkių street for many years. It was closed 6 years ago, the municipality was considering what to do with the building and planned to sell it.

The residents of Šančishki, who live next to the closed school, have noticed that children and teenagers have been breaking into the building recently.

“We see a group of youths entering the building, breaking and smashing things there. It happens that the light in the offices is on during the night. Young people even climb onto the roof. If this continues, we won’t be surprised if a fire breaks out in the building”, said Agnė Valančiūtė.

The woman said that residents record teenagers breaking into the school. These are still the same young people.

In the middle of July, the deputy director of Kaunas municipality administration Paulius Keras admitted that there is a problem. He then said that footage was received of a group of youths breaking into the school.

Then Mr. Keras promised that the building would be immediately conserved and other security measures would be taken.

One month later, on the evening of August 20, firefighters received a report that a fire had broken out in an abandoned school.

Not only firefighters, but also medics rushed to the scene. It was found that someone had set several books on fire in one room.

After this event, the head of the Real Estate Department of the Kaunas municipality, Donatas Valiukas, said that the administration of the city municipality has recorded several cases of vandalism in an unused school. Police officers have been informed about all of them.

“In order to ensure safety, the building was preserved, the windows were sealed with chipboards.

Seeing that the building continues to be vandalized, additional lighting and alarm systems were installed. In order to prevent possible criminal acts, we constantly cooperate with the police”, said D. Valiukas.

The municipality decided to sell this object.

“This decision has been abandoned. After evaluating the prospects for the development of the Upper Santi, this facility may be needed in the future.

It can be used for educational or other purposes,” said D. Valiukas.
