jpnn.com – JAKARTA – Manchester City coach Pep Guardiola has never doubted the quality of Ilkay Gundogan who was successfully brought back to his team this season. Previously, Ilkay Gundogan played for FC Barcelona last season.
Gundogan was Pep’s first signing in the summer of 2016 and he has been his last so far, as the German midfielder signed a one-year contract.
“We know the quality he played last season at Barcelona. He played at a high level, consistently with a lot of minutes, scoring a lot of goals,” Pep was quoted as saying on the club’s official website, Friday (23/8).
“We had no doubts when the possibility opened up. So, we are very happy to have him back,” he added.
Pep said his reunion with Gundogan happened for various reasons such as the player’s quality that was maintained throughout last season, his ease in adapting, his flexibility in his position in midfield, and his winning spirit which will be very useful for the purpose of targeting more trophies this season.
“That’s why he’s back, he’s a darling of his friends, of the fans. I’m pretty sure of that. He’ll try to fight again for us,” he said.
Meanwhile, Gundogan is delighted to be returning to the Citizens after a first spell in which he won 14 trophies while scoring 60 goals and providing 38 assists in 304 appearances.
“You realise how big this club is, the best club in the world,” said the 33-year-old midfielder.
