PepsiCo & Coca-Cola are the main plastic polluters | பகீர் தகவல்! Coca-Cola & PepsiCo are the leading cause of plastic waste in the world

by time news

As the world suffers greatly from pollution, many efforts are being made worldwide to reduce pollution, with plastic being a major contributor to pollution. Did you know that the 2 companies that make soft drinks are responsible for the spread of plastic pollution worldwide? These companies are Coca Cola and PepsiCo. Both companies are in the top two major contributors to plastic pollution for the fourth year in a row. Break Free From Plastic has released this ranking.

‘Break Free From Plastic’ is a movement to reduce the global use of plastics and find a permanent solution to this pollution problem. Some of the top polluting companies of 2021 are Unilever, Nestle, Procter & Gamble, Montless International, Philip Morris International, Danone, Mars and Colgate-Palmolive.

Global plastic production increased from 20 million metric tons in 1966 to 381 million metric tons (MMT) in 2015, 20 times in half a century. John Green, Tearfund’s senior policy adviser, said that although companies are focusing on recycling and pilot projects, it is not enough. Companies need to take action to reduce their reliance on single-use packaging. He said companies like Coca-Cola should take steps to collect empty bottles of soft drinks they have just sold.

In low-income countries, about 93 percent of garbage is burned or dumped on roads, open spaces or waterways, according to the World Bank. This clogs the drains and causes flooding. It also causes waterborne diseases. The report said that initially only ships and marine industries were responsible for marine waste, but now the plastic waste that spreads on land goes to sea through rivers and streams.

Research shows that about a thousand marine life are affected by plastic, which in turn becomes a threat to humans through seafood. The report states that the world generates about 8 MMT of plastic waste each year, which is equivalent to one truckload of plastic waste being dumped into the ocean every minute. If this trend continues, the amount of plastic that will be released into the sea by 2030 will reach 53 MMT. This is about half the total weight of the fish caught each year. Recycling facilities have not been developed, especially since the 1980s, and as a result plastic waste is being dumped in large quantities in landfills.

The report suggests several ways to tackle the pollution crisis. One of these is to reduce crude plastic production. It has also been suggested that developed countries should create a permanent space for household waste instead of dumping it. It has also been suggested that preventing plastic from entering waterways can prevent large amounts of waste from flowing directly into the sea.
