A beloved figure in post-punk music, Perry Bamonte, guitarist and keyboardist for the iconic band The Cure, has died at the age of 65. The band announced his passing on its website on December 26, stating he died “after a short illness at home over Christmas.” His death marks a significant loss for both the band and its devoted fanbase.
A Vital Part of The Cure’s Sound
According to a statement released by the band, Bamonte was “Quiet, intense, intuitive constant and hugely creative, ‘Teddy’ was a warm hearted and vital part of the Cure story.” His contributions spanned decades, shaping the distinctive sound that defined a generation.
Born in London, Bamonte initially joined The Cure’s touring team in 1984 as a guitar tech and assistant. He quickly proved invaluable, transitioning to a full-time band member in 1990. Over the next 14 years, he performed in over 400 shows with the group, becoming an integral part of their live performances and studio recordings.
Key Recordings and a Return to the Stage
Bamonte’s musical fingerprints can be found on several of The Cure’s most celebrated albums, including “Wish,” “Wild Mood Swings,” “Bloodflowers,” “Acoustic Hits,” and “The Cure.” Following his initial departure, he continued to pursue musical endeavors, performing with the group Love Amongst Ruin.
In 2022, Bamonte made a triumphant return to The Cure, participating in what the band described as “another 90 shows, some of the best in the band’s history.” This included a November 1, 2024, performance in London, captured for the concert film “The Show of a Lost World.”
Rock & Roll Hall of Fame Legacy
As a member of The Cure, Bamonte was inducted into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame in 2019, cementing his place in music history. Despite this loss, The Cure remains scheduled to fulfill a series of European festival dates and headline shows in 2026.
The band concluded its statement with heartfelt condolences, saying, “Our thoughts and condolences are with all his family. He will be missed.” His legacy as a talented musician and cherished bandmate will undoubtedly endure.
