May 30 is World MS Day. 42% of people with multiple sclerosis (MS) in the Netherlands do not dare to go out because of their bladder problems. They avoid cozy dinners, visiting and even daily groceries or an afternoon of shopping.
Because there is always a fear that an accident could happen. And because there is no public toilet nearby. As a result, they become isolated and their world becomes unnecessarily smaller. With the personalized toilet pass, they can get free access and priority to public and non-public toilets. If the pass is recognized in as many places as possible, people with MS will regain their freedom of movement.
The personalized toilet pass is an initiative of Coloplast and is supported by the National MS Fund, MS Association Netherlands and Jong & MS. MS in the Netherlands
There are 25,000 people with MS in the Netherlands. Every day someone in the Netherlands is diagnosed with MS. The first symptoms usually appear when people are between 20 and 40 years old. It is the most disabling disease among young people. There are medicines that slow down the disease, but there is not (yet) a solution for MS. MS is a disease of the central nervous system. Signals to and from the brain cannot be transmitted properly due to damage to the nerves. This causes bodily functions to shut down.
The personalized toilet pass helps people with MS to do the things they want to do freely. “We hope that everyone who sees the toilet pass gives access and priority to the toilet in their business, shop or institution. People with MS are counting on you!”
How can you help?
• Grant direct access to your toilet to people with this personalized toilet pass. They need immediate access due to a medical necessity.
• Inform your staff so that they are also aware of this personalized toilet pass and the medical necessity.
• Stick a window sticker on your window/door. This shows that you give access and priority to people with bladder and/or bowel problems with a medical need. You can request this window sticker free of charge by sending an e-mail to [email protected]
